How to Secure Brick Pavers

Brick pavers add timeless charm and durability to driveways, patios, and walkways. However, without proper installation and maintenance, they can shift, sink, or become uneven over time. To ensure your paved surfaces remain stable and attractive for years to come, it’s essential to use the right techniques for securing brick pavers. From proper base preparation to effective edging and joint stabilization, this guide will walk you through the key steps to keep your pavers firmly in place.

1. Proper Base Preparation

Excavate the Area: Dig 6–12 inches deep (depending on traffic load) and remove any organic material (grass, roots).

Add Gravel Base: Lay 4–6 inches of compacted crushed stone or gravel (¾-inch aggregate is ideal). Compact in 2-inch layers using a plate compactor.

Add Sand Layer: Spread 1–1.5 inches of coarse sand (concrete sand, not play sand) over the gravel. Level with screed rails.

2. Install Edge Restraints

Use plastic, metal, or concrete edging along the perimeter to prevent shifting.

Secure restraints with spikes or concrete footings.

3. Lay the Pavers Properly

Place pavers in your desired pattern, leaving 1/8–1/4 inch gaps for joint sand.

Use a rubber mallet to tap pavers into place for a snug fit.

4. Secure with Joint Sand

Sweep polymeric sand or regular masonry sand into the joints.

Polymeric sand hardens when wet, locking pavers together.

Compact again with a plate compactor (use a rubber mat to protect pavers).

5. Seal the Pavers (Optional)

Apply a paver sealer to protect against stains, erosion, and weed growth.

Reapply every 2–3 years for best results.

6. Prevent Movement & Erosion

Ensure proper drainage (slope pavers 1–2% away from structures).

Avoid heavy vehicle traffic unless pavers are rated for it.

Check and refill joint sand as needed over time.

Additional Tips:

For Driveways: Use thicker pavers (2⅜" or more) and a deeper gravel base.

On Slopes: Consider geogrid reinforcement under the base.

For High-Traffic Areas: Use concrete-set pavers (mortar or adhesive).

By following these steps, your brick pavers will stay secure and last for decades! Let me know if you need help with a specific step.
