How to Winterize Your Natural Stone Fountain: A Complete Guide

Introduction

As winter approaches, the temperature drops, and frost begins to settle in the garden. While our Natural Stone Fountains (Basalt Columns and Boulders) are incredibly durable and weather-resistant, water freezing inside the system can cause damage to pumps and plumbing. To ensure your beautiful water feature lasts for years to come, proper winter maintenance is essential.

Why Winterizing is Important?

When water freezes, it expands. If water is left inside the pump, tubing, or the stone's drilled holes, this expansion can cause cracks. A little preparation now can save you from expensive repairs in the spring.

Step-by-Step Guide

Drain the Water

The most important step is to remove water. Unplug the pump and drain the reservoir completely. For our Basalt Column Fountains, make sure no water is left pooling in the basin.

Remove and Clean the Pump

Take the pump out of the fountain. Clean it thoroughly to remove algae and debris. Store the pump indoors (in a garage or shed) where the temperature stays above freezing. This extends the pump's lifespan significantly.

Protect the Stone

While natural basalt and granite are frost-proof, we recommend covering your fountain with a breathable fountain cover. This prevents snow from accumulating and melting into the cracks, and keeps leaves and dirt out of the reservoir.

Dry the Stone

If possible, wipe down the stone surface. For polished black surfaces, this is a good time to apply a stone sealer if needed, ensuring it looks brand new when spring arrives.
